Your time has come: Portfolio Night 2012
As you surely know, today is the day when the world’s largest and most anticipated creative advertising portfolio review and annual recruiting event, jokingly called “speed-dating for creatives”, Portfolio Night will be held for 10th time, this year in 18 cities all around the world, including Athens, Austin, Budapest, Beijing, Chicago, Dallas, Dublin, Helsinki, Los Angeles, Montreal, Mumbai, New York, Paris, Philadelphia, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Stockholm and Toronto, and this (above) 30-second animation is the official opening video of the event, created this year by my fellow countrymen at Budapest-based full-service post-production house Umbrella, which is with communication agency Kirowski Isobar also the co-host of the evening in Budapest, to promote the long-awaited event.
Have you been working on your book for months and want to show your ‘Precious’ to your favorite creative director, or just want to get some feedback or good advice? Well, my fellow, the most important mission of the event, founded by Ihaveanidea and headed by the helper of young creatives, executive director of Art Directors Club, Ignacio Oreamuno, and supported in 2012 by global partners Getty Images and Creative Niche, exactly is “to connect the world’s best creative directors with the next wave of aspiring young ad talent in a fast-paced night of networking, book review and advice”! So, if you’re “absolutely, positively sure advertising is for you” and you’re planning to break into the industry (just like me) as copywriter or art director, next time, namely next year (you know, in case if the world doesn’t end in December), don’t forget to book your ticket well in advance to the nearest city to you, because thousands of young creatives are standing in the line to do the same.
Good luck to all the attendees today, may the creativity be with you and don’t worry, most CDs don’t bite, these are your big moments, so, just show off your skills, kick some ass and everything’s going to be alright, get your dream jobs! I truly wish some of them can make their dreams come true, just like I hope it for myself for the nearest future.

Viva la MerChedes - Scandal at CES
In a presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Daimler AG, the company that owns Merces-Benz managed to sully its relationship with a large swath of the Cuban-American buyer base.
Promoting a new Mercedes-Benz application called CarTogether, which using connected and social technology helps drivers carpool, to easily find compatible passengers to share rides with, Daimler executive Dieter Zetsche stood on stage before a big reproduced version of the famous photo - that became a symbol of communist revolutionary movements during the 1960s and ’70s - of Argentine-born Marxist revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara with the Mercedes’ three-pointed star corporate trademark emblazoned on the revolutionary’s beret in place of the communist red star symbol.
“Some colleagues still think that car-sharing borders on communism,” Zetsche reportedly said in his presentation. “But if that’s the case, viva la revolución!”
As the Miami Herald reported, the Cuban-American community “…expressed disgust that such a prestigious company would use the image of the revolutionary blamed for executions and implementation of communism on the island”.
Daimler AG, of course, quickly apologized, but it was too little, too late. Many Cuban Americans living in South Florida and other cities say they are not satisfied with the auto manufacturer’s explanation and plans to boycott Mercedes.
I think the story is not over yet…

Of course, there’s no connection between McDonald’s and the black ‘Dark Vador’ burger, which is made by French restaurant chain Quick to promote the 3D release of “The Phantom Menace.” But at least the ‘Yoda’ burger is not green…

Best test drive ever by MINI USA
MINI asked people to describe The Best Test Drive Ever. Period. in just six words, and people did.
As part of the MINI Coupe launch, Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners asked people online to describe the best test drive they could imagine—in just six words—and promised to use the winning entry as the plot for a two-minute ad, starring the winner. Mathew Foster is the lucky one, whose description was picked as #1 in The Best Test Drive Ever. Period. and the director brought Foster’s words to life in an epic spot that’s wild, energetic, surreal and fun-loving—and has something of a twist ending.
Mathew’s six word entry: STEWARDESS, SALT FLATS, PARATROOPERS, SUSHI, FALCONER.
